Jimbo
ps.... Shortly after ICD, I'll be posting a group of hooks for sale.  Been too long between sales, but I've been making hooks, so if you're interested in purchasing or simply browsing to see what I've been up to, please drop back by and do a little window shopping.

(please click on image to enlarge)
International Crochet Day (ICD) is fast approaching and for my part in promoting the ART of Crochet, I am having a contest to win this beautiful thread hook set.  The set includes 14 thread hooks that are interchangeable on the handle, so the winner will have, in effect, 14 hook sizes to choose from.  The set is made by "Boye" and is their fabled "interCHANGEABLE HEAD" brand.  The handle is genuine Jimbo and is made from a fallen branch of a beautiful Tamarack tree that is still growing on my Ranch, close to the real Jimbo Front Porch.  Tamarack is also known as Western Larch and is my favorite for what it does for us.  The tree is actually a deciduous (hardwood) tree because it's needles turn bright yellow in the cold air of Fall.  The wood from Tamarack is well used for lumber and firewood.  However, it's branches often simply fall to return to the earth, or are piled and burned.  It seems a shame that such beautiful wood become food for the insects or be turned to ashes.  This piece has been rescued, to become this year's prize to the winner of the annual Jimbo International Crochet Day contest.
To enter the contest, simply add a comment to this blog or e-mail me a brief note telling me of your wishes to own this hook set and more importantly, what YOU will do to promote the gentle art of Crochet this September 12.
I conceived International Crochet Day as a way to promote crochet around the world, and have been promoting the Holiday for several years now..... and it has been growing!  Participation has grown outside the United States, thanks to many who participated in the event in the past.  I especially honor the publisher of one of my favorite blogs and a TREMENDOUS Crochet talent, Sonia Maria of Brazil.  See her amazing talent and inspirational blog at http://falandodecrochet.blogspot.com/ .  Sonia and many other HUGELY talented folks in the Crochet world have been a major help in promoting the art of crochet.
You too can help, and in the process be entered to win this beautiful thread crochet set!
If you are unable to enter by commenting in this blog, simply email me at jimbocrochetwhittler@yahoo.com
The contest will end at 12pm, on International Crochet Day, September 12, 2011.  I will announce the winner on September 13.  The winner will be selected by a random drawing.

Thank you all for your participation in the past and in advance for your participation in the event this year!!

Good luck!!

Jimbo

Am I really the first to comment? It would be AMAZING to win this set of hooks, and to finally be able to feel a famous Jimbo handle in my hands! I self taught myself to crochet 5 years ago and I haven't stopped since. I would use this set of hooks to continue making gifts for friends and family! (one day I may be productive enough to sell on Etsy...) Fingers crossed!

Wow, Jimbo...AWESOME set. I would love to own that....would make my threadwork so much more enjoyable.

As for International Crochet Day, I always do my best to promote crochet EVERY day. It's become as much a part of my life as eating and breathing. :D

I will be mediating that day and I always take a project with me for down time. One of the mediators said to me last week " I just come to see what new project you have finished." She is going to join our local crochet group. I will also make a post on my blog.

Wow! What a beautiful giveaway! I'm going to promote Crochet Day on the 12th by yarn bombing the high school at which I teach. Maybe they'll stay up longer if I use our school colors!

Beautiful work! Thread hooks are my favorite. I use them for Irish Crochet, and various lace. It would be an honor to win this set!

For the promotion of Crochet Day on September 12th I will post a vintage project I'm working on for my blog and once again see if I can get my 8 yo son to try and learn it.

I love crochet hooks and would love in particular to have one of your special hooks, or in this case, handle. I've just moved to a new area where schools get out early on Mondays. After I've dropped my children off, I may just have a crochet in at the school library if they'll have me.

I plan to start a lace version of a katwise jacket. ( http://www.etsy.com/shop/katwise ) And having an easier to handle set of thread hooks will help.

And to promote crochet on the day, I'll be taking a project to work and working on it on my breaks.

I would LOVE to win your Beautiful Thread Crochet Hook Set...I've heard a lot about the "Jimbo" hooks and it would be a blessing for sure! I love to crochet and teach everyone that I can...I knit with a group of ladies weekly and have shared the crochet love with them...one day we were at knitting, everyone was crocheting...it was awesome!
Thanks for the great giveaway!

Such amazing, beautiful hooks! To celebrate, my 9 yo son and I will be crocheting in public. If the weather cooperates, we'll be out and about at the local park/walking trail. If not, then we'll head on down to the LYS, hang out and crochet (and pet the pretty yarn, since we're already there!)

Hi Jimbo, I would love this hook, it looks lovely. Such as shame most of this wood becomes insect food.
International Crochet Day this year falls on the day that our local church's knitting group meets. I will be going to the knitting group, and teaching everyone how to crochet. I have had lots of hooks donated for the cause and I can't wait to get more people 'hooking'.

i've been crocheting now for over 50 yrs and i love it as much now as i did when my grandma first taught me all those years ago, giving me a hook and ball of thread to start making chains. i've never used a big handle before, but i'm willing to learn if i get the chance with this great set :) we'll see if ya can teach an old dog new tricks :)

Hi Jimbo, What an awesome set. My Mommy starting teaching me to crochet since the age of 5,and now I am teaching my granddaughters. And I would love to win this beautiful set to pass them down to my granddaughters as a heirloom in my family.

cbk said...

I would love to win this set, I think it would be a joy to craft with. I have recently been thinking about my grandmother who crafted the most lovely tablecloths in thread many years ago and if I won, I might be inspired to create my own. Thanks for the chance to win! On ICD I will be teaching my 10 year old niece how to finish her very first crochet project, a scarf for her Nana that she's been working on over the Summer. A simple scalloped edge is the plan and I think she'll do just fine!

stannum said...

What a fabulous way to save that wood, Jimbo! It would be lovely to win such a set of hooks, I would use them incessantly and do my darndest to pass them down to my daughters :) I will spend September 12th the way I spend all my days, stitching away every free moment in a valiant attempt to catch up on all the patterns I've accumulated. Happy International Crochet Day everybody, and good luck to all!

What a wonderful set of hooks and your carved handle makes the set complete!
Almost all my hooks have adapted, enlarged, and/or padded handles due to my difficulty with my hands.
I especially love the feel of wood and have some really comfortable and easy to work with Jimbo hooks. I'm sure this beauty is no exception!
I have never come across a really large handle for use with steel hooks and would love to use this one!

Promoting Crochet Day is fun and natural - just toting along my current project and generating interest in the doc's office waiting room, at my LYS where we used to have only me as a crocheter (the rest were closet crocheter's till they saw me take mine out amongst a room full of knitters) I have and will continue to pave the way for Crochet!!! Hopefully on Crochet Day there will be a newbie there to teach!

Banana Moon Studio said...

On that particular day I am likely to be either crocheting a scarf out of alpaca/silk yarn to donate to my daughters' school for a fundraiser, or designing a great new project for a magazine!

My first forays into crocheting were with steel hooks and thread, having been taught by my grandmother when I was ten. Today arthritis prevents me from using the full sets of steel hooks I inherited from her and my aunt. I never stopped crocheting but now never use anything below a "D" hook. Looking at your beautiful and ingenious handle gives me confidence that I could do thread crochet again. But I wouldn't be making doll clothes, as I did in 1959!

The best way to promote crochet, I've found, is simply to be working on something in a public place and let the folks come to you. I hear things like, "You remind me of my mother/grandmother/great aunt..." Then I hear stories about beloved women who have passed on, and their influence on people's lives. And I hear things like, "That's crocheting? That's amazing!" Letting the world know that we aren't all about granny squares is the objective. Spending International Crochet Day hanging out in cafes, bookstores, and malls with my workbag would be a fine way to promote crochet, one person at a time.

Oh dear - what a lovely gift and I would LOVE to win. *crossing fingers*

I am part of the NYC Crochet Guild and we will be promoting the art of crochet a few days early by taking part in the 3rd Ave. Street Fair one of the largest street fairs in NYC on Sat., 9/10. If I were lucky enough to win this set of hooks I would donate them to our Guild's luncheon as a prize (even though I'd really, really want to keep them). Thanks for honoring ICD! ;-)

Jimbo, this is an awesome set and anyone who knows you and knows your work would most likely consider committing a minor crime to own it.

International Crochet Day is this coming Monday. No time to prepare a really outstanding statement and alas, it is on a work day. But, to honor the day I will:

1. Wear something crocheted to work.
2. Hang a sign on my office door - Happy International Crochet Day. My associates will think I am nuts, but there you go..I am, about crochet.
3.Crochet something for charity. Perhaps squares for Warm Up American or a square for the Diversity Project

Thank you for all the support that you give to the art of crochet.

Wow! What a beautiful giveaway! I'm going to promote Crochet Day on the 12th by giving away 2 crocheted blankets. My daughter works for a pharmacy and comes home crying some days because she gets close to some of the customers. My victim on the 12th will be a 12 year old boy who has arthritus and is in severe pain everyday. Second one goes to a lady fighting breast cancer. I want to give away 3 more in December. I'll put the hook to good use. Thanks

Wow Jimbo you really know how to get us ladies excited!!!!

I, as many others have said as well, enjoy crochet and it is a second nature to me as eating, sleeping, cleaning-(ok, maybe NOT cleaning LOL)

Mom taught me crochet when I was 8 years old - I am now 55. I usually gift all I make as it puts smiles on faces..isn't that what the world needs more of? I use my crochet skills by proudly donating my time to H.A.P.--which makes afghans for our wounded warriors.
I would LOVE to be considered in your giveaway--Thanks for all you do Jimbo.

Would love that hook set; will publicly crochet, wherever I am this Monday, definitely at the library and a coffeeshop in a bookstore; also, I've recently tumblr-blogged: http://maggiemelba.tumblr.com/post/9912720075/natalka01-super-fun-triangular-granny-square which is what I will be working on; that post has gotten 195 likes/reblogs, so far, in a couple of weeks

I would love to own this as I am a proud owner of many of your hooks and I have hand issues, as you may remember. On Crochet day I will take my craft out in public and crochet at Starbucks. I do this every saterday , not with a group, just me while my husband reads. You should see the looks. I bet some have never seen before!

This may be a duplicate comment...it went wonky when I sent it the first time...

I would love to have an interchangeable hook set but the budget just doesn't allow for it. As for promoting the day, just so happens I have to be at the hospital for therapy that day. So I will be crocheting in public at the hospital, in the therapy center, on the bus, and in the lobby while waiting for the bus. People often comment while I'm crocheting in public and I'll use the opportunity to tell them about International Crochet Day! I wish I'd found out about it sooner--I would have made up a T-shirt!

I love crochet and everything about it. I am particularly fond of wooden hooks, so a creafted one would be extra special. My plan for September 12, 2011 is to wear crochet and eat my lunch outside and crochet in plain view of the world around me.

Hello Jimbo,
Is it that time of year already??? I have plans to teach my daughter-in-law to crochet (by the happiest of chances the lessons just happen to be scheduled to begin on Sept 12!) I'm looking forward to sharing crochet and spending some time getting to know this wonderful girl my son was lucky enough to find. If I'm lucky enough to win this beautiful Jimbo for thread work I'll be in seventh heaven. :-) And if not, I'll still feel like a winner! Happy ICD everyone!

Hi!
I am a crochet designer from Latvia. And guess what - I have pronounced the whole next week - Crochet Week! How cool is that!? I am organizing a CAL in Latvia on Saturday (17th of Sept). We are having Parlament election and I am inviting Latvian crocheters to take part and crochet while we all are waiting for election results at our TVs. Then I will collect and publish the election night works in my blog. :)
And yes - your hooks are gorgeous and I would so love to win the set! :)

I would love a chance to own such a beautiful crochet hook. In this country we don't get a huge range of hooks to play with.

I crochet in public pretty much every day and trust me that is a very rare sight in these parts. I think I have only seen one or two people knitting in public in the past 15 years and nobody crocheting :(

Akua Lezli Hope said...

I admire your creativity and creations. In studying for my crochet teacher certification part two, I had to make a piece using thread. My piece failed. I had a hard time wielding the hook and corcheting with my usual skill and ease. So this set would rescue me from the pain of bare steel hook manipulation. I will
promote ICD by writing about it on my blog and FB page. Since I'm a crochet designer, I relish the opportunity and occasion to celebrate crocheting. Thanks!

If I had a Jimbo hook I would be the envy of all the knitters and other hookers at our Monday night group. I'm glad we have an international day just for us hookers. It makes me feel specialer than I already do.

What a lovely handle to work with this set. I already have a set of the interchangeables, so if I were to win, first thing I'd do would be to have a contest on my blog to giveaway my then extra set.

For ICD, I'll actually be sitting at a coffee shop with two very dear friends holding our very first crochet lesson. They asked me last week if I would help them learn and it just so happens we'll be meeting next week. I'm meeting a couple of days with different friends. I cannot wait to spread my love of crochet to others!

Thanks for the opportunity to enter your contest!

Your attitude, declaring September 12 as the International Crochet Day, was fantastic! Thank you, all year, so. Thus, the art of crochet is perpetuated ...

Last year, on August 12, my granddaughter was born, Isabella! My daughter wanted me around for four months. My blog stopped. For this reason, do not disclose that year the International Day of crochet on my blog. Sorry about that.

This year, as did several other, I'm posting it. I promise that in the years following, I will take care to disclose earlier.

Thank you for the reference and link attentive!

Here in Brazil, you have an admirer of his art and an ally in spreading the art of crochet.

Hi Jimbo,
Your hooks are something special! I would love to have this set to help me with thread crochet. My fingers cramp with the small stuff and I think your handle would help that and enable me to crochet more with thread.
As for promoting crochet, I have begun to teach my oldest (she's 37) to crochet. We've made good progress and she's done squares and has moved on up to some scarves.
Unfortunately, she lives in another state so I won't be with her on the 12th. But as crochet is my first love, I talk about it to anyone and everyone who will listen. :)

Hello, friend.
Wonderful what you are doing. Simply delicious appreciating the art. Congratulations. What I always like to do, is to teach more people the art of crochet. I have in my blog, some handiwork that two nieces did.

Devo tudo a minha mãezinha.

Hoje me sinto uma pessoa realizada, capaz e segura.

Well the n.1 reason I would like this set it is because I don't have any set for my thin needles and I have huge cramps on my fingers because they are too thin. So many cramps I can't crochet for a while... :( lol

To promote it I will for the first time make a post on my blog about it and CROCHET like hell! lol

Have a blessed International Crochet Day!
