COCOBOLO H AUCTION CLOSED.!! and SAPELE FARA Challenge Prize Hook

DAWN IS THE HIGH BIDDER AND GETS THE COCOBOLO H!!
AND ADA WINS THE SEPELE 7

PLEASE CLICK ON IMAGE TO SEE DETAIL

Here are two amazing hooks. One is up for bids (the Cocobolo hook); the other (the Sapele hook) will be given to one of the participants of the October FARA (Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance) Afgan Square Challenge.

First the FARA prize hook. This hook has been done in deep appreciation to those who participated in the FARA Square challenge. Believe this! This talented and generous group of crochetiers have crocheted enough squares to make 16 afgans!! Can you believe that!!! That's 1005 ONE THOUSAND FIVE 8 inch squares!!! All this to raise awareness and help fundraising for research to find a treatment or cure for Friedreich's Ataxia (want to learn more about FA?... see the video:

montekids.org

The afgans which will be assembled by a true Angel, Angelfire, who is FAMOUS in "Crochetville" and "Charity Bandits" internet crochet groups. So the VERY LEAST I could do is make a hook to give away as a prize to one of these generous souls. And the hook I've picked is, like FA, a not well recognized but common hook size. Its a 7, the only hook size on the bates scale to be designated by a number. Its made of Sapele, which is a really pretty kin to Mahogany, but in a MUCH more hook-friendly grain. You can click on the image (the Sapele hook is the one on the bottom of the two hooks shown) to see just a little of the beautiful grain.
A drawing will be done for this hook... from a list of the Generous who participated in this fantastic effort.

I'll announce the drawing date soon.

Next up is a really exotic and beautiful hook (the top hook in the photo) that I'll put up for bids to support the porch project.
This hook is made of Cocobolo, an exotic South American VERY hardwood. Cocobolo, needless to say, doesn't grow up on the Crick. Its a store bought wood (I got this piece at Woodcraft) and I don't mind telling you it's a bit expensive.
Anyways this wood is known for its hardness and beauty (as you can easily see). I'd call it a pleasant blend of almost Ebony hardness and Rosewood beauty. The hook is the trademark Jimbo Hook shape with thumbrest and is 7 inches long.

So I'll take bids on the Cocobolo hook till 10pm Tuesday night, November 18, and try to post bids as they come in.

You can email your bids to me at:

Not a gob of hooks to bid on, eh? Well when I've had time to make hooks (which doesn't seem to be at a premium lately) I've been catching up. I'm in the process of finishing a replacement hook for the TRAVELING HOOK III

Also... Since they haven't told me that a cure has been found... I'm still making Chophooks with all proceeds from sales going to FARA. For more about Chophooks, please see my Dec. 7, 2007 post.... or block and click on
