INTERNATIONAL CROCHET DAY , SEPT. 12 CONTEST

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

I used a random number generator to pick the winner of the custom International Crochet Day hook, and it did a FANTASTIC job! The winner all the way from London England is NEZUMI
Nezumi (not her real name of course) studied fashion design at The London College of Fashion and did her work experience with the wonderful designer Bill Gibb.
After a few years and an opportunity to return to study part-time, she studied for a City & Guilds in Crochet, Machine Knitting and Embroidery, and Teaching Adults. She started teaching and also designing knitted and crocheted swatches through agents, plus continued to design and made garments and jewellery for sale.
Her website NezumiWorld started in 2002 as a creative ideas textile site. The crochet part of the site was put in place first and it just got bigger & bigger and is now mainly a crochet only site (there are some hidden knitting and craft/textile stuff which may make an appearance in 2010), There so many different styles of crochet and the site continues to grow monthly.
Nezumi has patterns for sale on Ravelry and some free ones too, look out for more coming soon.

Check Nezumi's blog at:

Now to make this beautiful little block of wood into a hook worthy of such an artist!

Thanks everyone for entering!

Jimbo

I know. This doesn't look much like a hook, does it? BUT this is a block of what I think is the most beautiful wood in the world. AND I will turn this block of wood into a hook for the winner of this year's International Crochet Day contest. You can see exmaples of Bois de Rose hooks below this post. It indeed IS a very beautiful wood.
What is International Crochet Day? Well the date is Sept. 12, a day to celebrate and promote the gentle art of crochet. Its a growing event around the world and with your help will grow even bigger.
How to promote crochet on Sept 12? Well that's a part of the contest. What will YOU do to promote crochet? Last year we had well over a hundred entries from folks who committed to promote crochet by doing contests in their blogs, asking local yarn shops to promote crochet on Sept 12, crocheting in public, offering to teach others to crochet, and more. MANY of the entries for the contest came from outside the US, and that's a very good thing, since this is "International", a gathering of crochetiers from all over the globe to let others know about the crochet art.
THE CONTEST: This year I welcome and invite crochetiers from all countries to participate in this contest by promoting the art of crochet. You can enter the contest simply by telling me what you'll do to promote crochet on International Crochet Day (ICD). You can enter by posting a comment here in my blog, or if that doesn't work, simply email me at:

jimbocrochetwhittler@yahoo.com

I'll do a drawing from entries and announce the winner on Sept 13. The winner will have a choice as to the style and size of the hook to be made, custom to her/his desires (within reason, of course).

An excellent example of International Crochet Day promotion has been by the amazingly talented and gracious, Sônia Maria who publicized the contest in her HUGELY popular Brazilian crochet blog, Falando de Crochet!

Oh, and to those kind and faithful followers of my blog, your entry will count twice!

Good luck to all, and HAPPY INTERNATIONAL CROCHET DAY!!!

Jimbo

How generous of you, Jimbo! I am hoping to meet up with some crochet buddies and crochet together in the coffee shop where we meet! We met at the Ville and are meeting to crochet together this Saturday!!!

I didn't know that crochet had a day... well now that I do know. I think I'll go to the busiest coffee shop and work on a couple of designs I'm working on.
And if I can convince my friend to come out I can try teaching her again.

I'm going to wear a vest I just finished crocheting (it makes a great conversation starter). I'm also doing a giveaway on my crochet blog.

And of course I'm a follower of your blog :)

Oooh! Wouldn't it be lovely if there were a bunch of "crochet graffiti" to pop up on the morning of the 12th...that would certainly gain some attention! I'll have to stop in my LYS (not exactly crochet friendly, but they try)and see about planning something, maybe "Hooking in the Park"

Hi Jim-

I will be watching football that day as it is the opening weekend of NFL. I will have my crochet with me when I am at the Sports bar watching. That should make for some interesting comments!!

I will post about ICD on Facebook - both in my personal account and on groups - and I will try very hard to crochet in public somewhere!

I have a couple of filet crochet bookmarks available free on my blog to celebrate the day :)

I'm heading in to my LYS today to discuss promoting it. (I'm head hooker there!)

I'm thinking a "Day of Crochet" on Saturday and offer some freebies to those that show up.

Hooray for National Crochet Day! Well, there should be a parade, but can you imagine hundreds of people trying to march and crochet at the same time? Let's just say I'm not even up to the challenge of chewing gum and crocheting simultaneously! Seriously, I will wear a sweater I crocheted and randomly gift small crocheted bookmarks to unsuspecting people.

Jim, As you may know, I teach the honeless children at the Maria house in town, I volunteer my time there, they help women with children get back on thier feet by helping them with job skills, resumes and such. So I spend my time with the kids, if they are capable I teach them the art of crochet, the little ones like to watch. that is how I keep the ART going. JoBug

I have started teaching my fiance to crochet and so for ICD I plan on teaching him more detailed crochet. Also I was so excited when a friend of mine asked for my help in teaching him to crochet as well. So I of course got all excited because I love it when ppl show interest in the art of crochet and even more exciting when they ask me to help them learn!!!

Your hooks are just gorgeous. With my health, I tend to not make plans for future dates, as I never know how I'll feel when the date finally rolls around.

That being said, how do I promote crochet? I take some with me and work on it, in full view of everyone with every doctor's appointment, and every other place I know I'll have to wait. I'm attempting to teach my kids to crochet, though some are picking it up faster than others. I make presents (crocheted of course) for everyone I know and sometimes for those I don't.

In other words, I figure the best way to promote it is to teach it to new generations and show off the things you can make to people all year round, not just on one particular date each year.

On the 12th, To promote Crochet! I'll most likely go Geo-cashing with my son and each box we find. I'll leave a crochet item or I was thinkin of leaving a little scrap ball of yarn and hook. with instructions to crochet.
I also weekly get with a friend and been teaching her to crochet. She's always asking me to teach her something new.

Hi all! On September 12th I will be signing as a volunteer editor on Ravelry in order to edit a lot of crochet pattern pages that really need some organization. I hope to contribute with accurate information so more people get confident to start crocheting these patterns in the future.

Sunday Crochet International Day is also Grandparents Day and I'll be doing some crochet at the park while watching my grandson have fun playing! My other 4 grandchildren are a state away and I'll be wishing them a wonderful day as well.

I have admired your hooks FOREVER!! Okay well since I've been crocheting. I'm taking a project to work, which I do alot, I used to be scared to because I get a lot of "old Lady" comments because I'm only 21 and it's not "cool" but I just don't care anymore because it's something I like to. & I plan to teach a co worker of mine on breaks. She's mentioned wanting to learn. So I'm going to suprise her with a spare hook and some yarn. =-]

I am going to take my 13 year old great niece out for lunch and teach her to crochet in PUBLIC.

Thank you for this opportunity. I can't say that I deserve one of your hooks but I sure would like to try one after all the hype that they get at the ville.

Thank you

Having only just heard of the existance of ICD, I have immediately and publically vowed to spend the day with a hook and some yarn in my hands. Looking forward to it! (See thecraftorialist.com).

I've posted about your contest on my two blogs and will of course be crocheting tomorrow, in public if possible.

Hello Jimbo! This year I've put an ICD post on my blog inviting people to crochet (or kn*t, if they must, LOL) warm winter hats for Pakistan. This is in response to an appeal from anotherpath4/Wendy on Ravelry. The only thing better than hooking is hooking to help. :-)

Today is September 12 and I went to my local park and crocheted! Many people stopped to ask what I was working on (Squares for HeartMade Blessings) and I told them about crochet and even taught one person! She sat down and asked and I pulled out my extra hook and some yarn and we spent the next two hours learning granny squares! I think I've got her hooked!

Unknown said...

I don't necessarily deserve it more than anyone else but I just had to enter :)
It's amazing that with one hook you can create such beautiful things, practical things and bring people together. Not to mention what a hook can do for an amputee ;)
