Her Highness H....ONE BID AUCTION (BIDS ARE CLOSED AND WE HAVE A HANDMAID FOR THE REGAL HOOK!)

(IMAGES ARE CLICKABLE)

I REALLY WISH I COULD SHOW THIS HOOK AROUND A BIT MORE.. THE WOOD IS JUST SO FINE. BUT KNOWING IT IS GOING TO A REALLY GOOD HOME IS COMFORTING.
WHO IS THE NEW OWNER, YOU ASK? AINT TELLIN. HOW MUCH DID IT GO FOR??? NOT TELLING THAT EITHER (THIS KIND OF INFORMATION IS KEPT QUIET IN REGAL FAMILIES YOU KNOW).

WHO KNOWS... MAYBE HER HIGHNESS'S NEW HANDMAID WILL ARRANGE PUBLIC APPEARANCES OF THE REGAL BEAUTY FROM TIME TO TIME.

AND THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR BIDS!!

While we were in Portland, visiting my son and daughter in law, my son and I went by the local Woodcraft woodworker's store. I always gravitate to the cut-off bin where guys have a tendency to throw away the best cuts of wood because they are "unworkable". There, in that lowly bin I discovered some pieces of wood that are some of the most beautiful grain I have ever come across. This is one of them.
Now I can't tell you what kind of wood it is. First i thought it was Bloodwood, and it might be, but it's such a regal color that I began to think Purpleheart. Then when it polished down some, i started thinking Rosewood, but it didn't have that distinctive Rosewood odor. So for lack of a wood name, we'll just call it Regal Wood because its just about the classiest wood EVER. I tried to adjust the color in the photos to match the color of the wood, but as pretty as it looks here, multiply that by a factor of 3 and you have a closer approximation to the real richness of this wood.
And I, your humble hook whittler, made an H hook of it!
The hook is of the Trademark Jimbo shape as you can see, but the thumb rest is not sanded, its carved. The wood and sharpness of the knife allowed the surface to be carved to a texture that is unique and that will grow smoother with years of use (see my little post about Patina below).
As with anything regal, there is a flaw. Its doubtful you can see it in the photos, and I'm certain it won't affect performance or feel, just something to lend the hook a certain regal humility.
Yup... er Yes, the grain figure and color in this hook is beyond pretty, its Majestic. It's regal in size too - 7 1/2 inches long.
So while this amazing hook was slowly evolving and looking more and more beautiful as the grain started showing, I began thinking that this should be no ordinary auction. This should be, unlike me, sophisticated. So what we'll do is take your single highest bid. I won't post any of the bids until the auction is over.. at which time I will announce the winner and bid amount (if the winner gives permission). Second bids will be allowed in the event of a tie.
I'll give you till this coming Monday to ponder your bid and will close the auction that night at 10pm Pacific Standard Time.
